Pastoral
Care, Spiritual Care Booklist
A
CRITIQUE OF PASTORAL CARE
Stephen
Pattison
SCM/Sep
00. ISBN 0-334-02815-9
This
is a challenging book where the author advocates the "nurturing"
role of a chaplain over and against the "prophetic" role. He is
particularly critical of mental heath chaplains, who in his view
maintain the status quo rather than challenge the system. He examines
the meaning and aims of pastoral care and shows that this process
needs careful challenge, discipline and confrontation and draws
upon a number of different theories and practices from the church
to justify this. He sees pastoral care as a corporate activity relating
to socio-political factors, which determine the care of people.
He is particularly challenging of the individualist culture, which
permeates the NHS.
ADAM:
GOD'S BELOVED
Henri
J Nouwen
DLT/Oct
97. ISBN 0-232-52246-4.
Henri
Nouwen completed Adam: God's Beloved just weeks before his death
in 1996. It is a personal memoir about his friendship with Adam,
a severely handicapped man he knew at the L'Arche Daybreak Community
in Canada. Although Adam could not speak and was wracked with violent
seizures, Nouwen called Adam "my friend, my teacher, and my guide,"
and credited Adam with renewing his faith in a particularly dark
period of life.

Sheila
Cassidy
DLT/91.
ISBN 0-232-51790-8.
Cassidy,
a physician, went to work in Chile. After treating a wounded revolutionary
she was arrested, imprisoned, and tortured. Later, she returned

about the terminally ill, the medical establishment, her moving
visit to L'Arche (a religious community of men who live with and
care for the handicapped), and her struggle to develop her own spirituality
as a solitary lay person. Her book is important reading for hospice
volunteers and excellent spiritual reading on classic themes of
abandonment, death, loneliness, and poverty.

On
December 8, 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby's life was forever altered
when a part of his body he'd never heard of--his brain stem--was
rendered inactive. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, his exquisitely
painful memoir, is neither a triumphant account of recovery nor
a journey into the abyss of self- pity. Instead, it is a tender
testament to the power of language and love.
