Diocesan Bishop:
Bishops Adviser on Hospital Chaplaincy

JOB PURPOSE

To advise the Bishop on matters relating to Hospital Chaplaincy; to serve as the prime link between Chaplains and the Diocese and its staff; and to represent the interests of Chaplaincy within the Diocese.

KEY RESULT AREAS

1          To provide advice to the Bishop on matters relating to the work of all Hospital Chaplains within the Diocese.

2          To serve as the main contact point between the Bishop and local NHS Health Authorities and Trusts through the Chairman and/or Chief Executive.

3          To oversee the development of local policy on chaplaincy including that concerned with the development of links between faiths within hospitals and between parish and hospital staffs.

4          To represent the interests of chaplaincy within the Diocese and within the healthcare community locally. 

5          To become familiar with the employment arrangements and financial regime existing within NHS Trusts in order to support the employment of Part-Time Chaplains.

6          To provide pastoral support to all Chaplains within the Diocese including supporting their induction to the new role and guiding the development of appropriate relationships between Whole-Time and Part-Time appointees through the development of mentoring arrangements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Knowledge of the organisation and management of the NHS, Health Authorities and Trusts. A good understanding of financial management, especially annual business planning regimes; human resource management; and industrial relations.

Skills in negotiation and influencing, coaching and counselling, and people management.
